In South Africa we walked past a woman holding a sign that said “I need money for my child”. Julia looked at her and felt sad. In Rome, on the Spanish Steps we walked by a woman holding a tin cup. She asked us for money to buy food. I asked Jack how he felt about this and he said he felt sad because we had money and that she had none. In Zambia and Kenya several schools were looking to improve their facilities and provide better education for the local children. They need money and ask for our help. In Maasai Mara Reserve, several Maasai men gather to celebrate the completion of their first year as an anti-poaching team. They have saved many animals from the poachers and have heightened the awareness among locals that poaching is illegal. They need supplies and vehicles to continue their work and ask for help. In South Africa, a team from Kruger National Park test lions for bovine TB. They would like to build a facility with modern laboratory equipment. They need money. There were many other needs from helping families to preserving wildlife.
So, what is our take away? How do we as a family want to remember these experiences? We realize that we cannot help everyone; instead we can understand some of the world’s problems and challenges, stay in touch with global news and choose the causes where we can make a difference. This will be our introduction to a foundation called Caring Kids Foundation “CKF”.
